Multiple holes were cored through the structural floor slab during a renovation of an upper floor unit of the Hale Pau Hana Condominiums, located in Kihei, Hawaii.  Erickson Structural was retained to review these conditions and render an opinion regarding the structural integrity of the concrete slab.  Erickson Structural reviewed the original construction drawings, coordinated with a testing firm to conduct a scan of the reinforcing steel and performed engineering analyses using the data gathered during the scan.  The results of the analysis showed that the slab was structurally deficient.  Erickson Structural then designed fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) strengthening measures to compensate for the loss of strength attributed to the slab penetrations.  Erickson Structural’s design allowed for minimal impact upon the existing building aesthetics.  The design also allowed for repairs to be completed in a rapid manner, an important factor to the owners of the affected units who had rental guests scheduled to arrive soon after the completion of the renovation project.  Erickson Structural remained active on the project during the construction phase to respond to contractor questions and unforeseen conditions, allowing the project to move forward with minimal delays.
